What is the Dermal-Epidermal Junction?

The Dermal Epidermal Junction, or the D.E.J is the area where the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis, connects with the lower layer, the dermis.

In youthful skin, the dermis and epidermis connect to form a wave-like structure. The D.E.J helps support the skin's structure, and as we age the wave-like structure flattens, causing the skin to slacken and create what we know as the visible signs of aging. As the skin ages, the D.E.J loses integrity and visible wrinkles are more prominent.
