How much can I spend with Afterpay?
  • You will be shown an estimated amount you can spend when you log into your account or app. The amount you can spend using Afterpay generally changes based on how you use your account. We know that being aware of factors that influence your available spending can help you stay in control of your finances, so we’ve broken down some of those factors below:

    Making payments on time
Your Afterpay payment history is an important factor that affects how much you can spend with your account. Here are a few things to look out for that may impact your available spending:

    • Tenure since first order
    • The frequency of orders made
    • Payment source
    • On time payments made
    • The frequency of on time payments made
    • Late payments
    • The frequency of late payments
    • How late a payment was made
    • How often orders get declined due to insufficient funds on the payment method on-file

Just as there are things that might decrease the amount you can spend, good spending behavior like making payments on time might increase what you can spend with your account.

Please contact Afterpay contact us to ask how they might be able to help if you're facing financial hardship and are unable to make payments.

Why is my order being declined?
  • There are a few different reasons as to why your order could be declined.

You are a new customer of Afterpay:

If you have had your account for less than 6 weeks, Afterpay may limit you to a smaller number of purchases. Afterpay restrictions are tighter when you first get started. This is to ensure that Afterpay are upholding their commitment to responsible spending.

    What can you do?

    • Try lowering your order amount if you are shopping with Afterpay for the first time. Whilst this is not a guarantee that your order will be approved, it is still a good starting point.
    • Depending on how many orders you have placed, you may need to allow some time before you attempt to shop with Afterpay again. After the 6 weeks have passed, you may be able to spend more with Afterpay.

What has your recent order history been like?

Afterpay is passionate about ensuring that customers use their service responsibly. If you have had recent late payments, this can impact your ability to shop with them.

    What can you do?

    • Ensure that your payments are paid on time. You may need to allow some time to build a positive repayment history with Afterpay again before you can place new orders.
    • Think you’re going to be late with a payment? You may be able to extend the due date in Afterpay App! Alternatively, you can get in touch with Afterpay at least 24 hours before the due date so they can offer some help.

    Check your card:

Your card is super important! There are a few things that you can double check if your order is being declined.

    What can you do?

    • Double check how much money you have in your bank account. You must have 25% of the purchase price available on your card for your order to be approved. For example, a $100 order would require $25 to be in your account.
    • Is your card working as expected? Make sure to check that your card is active and unrestricted. If your bank has blocked your card, your order will not go through and Afterpay cannot override this! When in doubt, reach out to your bank to make sure.

    Still unsure?

Afterpay does not approve 100% of all orders, however, they do make a fresh assessment every time you attempt to place an order with them.

    What can you do?

    • You may need to give it some time and reattempt to place your order at a later date.
